Bridgetown, Barbados

Posting date – Still 20th January….

13th January, 2020

Now Val and I have been to Barbados before, twice in fact, so we had done the island tour and, indeed, had already explored Bridgetown, but felt it would be good to get off the ship and refresh our memories of the delights available. So we disembarked with our first stop being the terminal along with a horde of other travellers all trying to get the free Wi-Fi to work, which we did eventually (hence the blog on Madeira).

Unfortunately neither Val nor I had any Barbadian dollars or US dollars, so we decided to walk into town, which is usually about 20 minutes. Unfortunately Val’s Parkinson’s decided to make itself felt, so it took a bit longer than that and we only had a look at the main street (popping into the bank to get some Barbadian dollars) and the outside of the Parliament building with its statue of Nelson opposite.

I did revisit the very pleasant St Michael’s Cathedral which has some splendid engravings celebrating past occupants of the island many of whom seemed to die rather young from diseases like Yellow Fever.

We then took a taxi back to the ship and I popped back out again to post the blog. All-in-all fairly uneventful, though it was fun to hear the broad West Indian accents speaking what I presume was English though you would have been forgiven for thinking was something else (and, indeed, it could well have been). A few other sights….

OK, it is getting dark here in Guatemala and the ship will leave soon, so this could be the last post before Mexico (two days’ time), so time to publish….
