East of Suez – Part 9 – Special Butterfly Edition!

25th January, 2024

Not much reading today.

I was off again today, courtesy of Saniah coming to see Val. Having seen most things in KL over the years, I decided to pay a visit to the KL Butterfly Garden. Wow!! What a photographer’s dream! You might be pleased to know that I have pared it down to a shortlist, which I have further reduced to ensure that I don’t use up all of the storage on the blog website. You have no idea how restrained I have been – and should you wish to see the whole body of work, just let me know. Even then…..

The Butterfly Garden, KL – with ducks!
A Great Helen Swallowtail, I believe…
I am sure you are all familiar with Euploea Mulciber…
The garden was very lovely, with lots of running water (and butterflies). Just a smidgeon hot…! I could have done with a dip.
OK, this one is Doleschallia Bisaltide.
Not forgetting Lexias Pardalis
Thought you might like a break from the butterflies…
And we are back, with the resplendent Parthenos Sylvia! They had a number of trays with flowers (in this case hibiscus or bunga raya, the national flower of Malaysia) or fruits, which made photographing the butterflies rather easy.
They seem to enjoy pineapple slices…
Athyma perius or common sergeant.
Time for a bit of arty photos… you can take it or leaf it…
With fronds like these…
…who needs anemones….
Watching the watcher…
This one was very keen and landed on my hand as I was photographing another one, so I had to get the other camera out and snap it.
Probably Papilio Clytia, not to be confused with a Malayan Zebra.
Troides helena…
A Vindola Erota, I am informed by my iPad Photos. Quite a few of the butterflies had chunks missing and this one seemed to have been in the wars too.
And finally, the star attraction a Rajah Brooke or Trogonoptera brookiana. These were fairly prolific and rather lazy, so easy to photograph.
OK, just one more, a Blue Pansy…

They had an indoor bit too where there were loads of cases with the biggest beetles, moths, butterflies etc. Also a few containers with stick insects and snakes…

I think this goes by the splendid name of the Great Green Bushcricket, but I could be wrong.
A tree snake getting curious…

OK, I had better stop there as we are due to head for the airport shortly (I am typing this on the morning of 28/1/24 – Happy Birthday to my grandson, Dylan – 6 today!!!).

More on my walk round KL soon.
